Matched Play Muster Lists (Battle March)
URL Copied!

As mentioned previously, Warhammer: the Old World - Battle March is well suited to matched play, the smaller armies required making travel easier and games quicker. Writing muster lists for these smaller armies does, however, present challenges, whilst also introducing new possibilities.

The challenges are, of course, that players must make tough decisions when deciding which models to include in their armies and which to leave out. This can result in players wishing they had a few more points to spend in order to include a favourite unit, but adding those additional points and increasing the size of the games is not always the best option. Battle March games are deliberately small and, should the points limit increase too much, games become longer and battlefields much larger, defeating the purpose of the small format.

With this in mind, and should they wish, event organisers can run matched play events where players are allowed to bring not one, but two muster lists, enabling them to field a broader variety of models from their collection.
On one hand, this allows players to write two very different muster lists, each designed to excel in areas the other does not. However, at the event, they must decide which list to use prior to each game and, because such decisions are made without knowing which of the two muster lists their opponent will use, they risk choosing poorly. This presents a conundrum; should each muster list be a well-rounded force, capable of dealing with any enemy, or should each be more specialised, relying upon the player's luck to field the right army at the right time?

Two Muster Lists

At the event organisers discretion, players may be allowed to bring two muster lists to a Battle March matched play event. In such cases, the event organiser must make it clear to all attendees well in advance.

Factions: Each muster list should be drawn from the same faction. In other words, each player must choose a single faction and then write two muster lists. A player cannot, for example, bring one Empire of Man army and one Warriors of Chaos army.

Composition Lists: Each muster list can be written using the same composition list, or two different composition lists. For example, an Empire of Man player might write one muster list using their faction's Grand Army composition list, and the other using the Knightly Order Army of Infamy composition list.

List Selection

Each muster list must be used at least once over the course of the event. Prior to each game, players should share their muster lists with their opponents, giving them time to study each and making it clear which is number one and which is number two. Then, each player chooses which list to use in the game ahead in secret, both players revealing their choice simultaneously (perhaps by making a note on a piece of paper, or by revealing a concealed dice).

However, in the final round of the event, players that have not already used both muster lists must use their unused list.
