Oddities of War

The following pages present three tables, each of which serves to highlight events that, for the most part, would have only the most minor of impacts on a large-scale battle, or perhaps even go unnoticed. But such events can have a dramatic influence on the result of a smaller melee.

Disruptive Weather provides a game-long effect that can greatly change the pace and flow of the battle, from swirling wind storms that temporarily blind those they pass with barrages of dust and dirt, to torrential downpours that turn the ground underfoot into a quagmire of thick mud. Wilderness Terrain helps to reinforce not only the danger presented by the untamed wilds of the Old World, such as patches of near-impassible briar and the lairs of lurking beasts, but also unexpected blessings such as ready-made defences, or wild plants with medicinal properties.

Finally, the Chaos of War table reflects the truly haphazard nature of war. When used, stray baggage carts and wandering mercenaries alike can suddenly appear on the battlefield, turning the tide just as effectively as the dwindling of ammunition or the unreliability of magic, and all in the blink of an eye.
