Mastering Arcane Magic
URL Copied!

Those that have studied the arcane arts for long enough are often able to predict patterns within the Winds of Magic. In battle, such arcane mastery enables a Wizard to outwit and outmatch their rivals through cunning ploys derived from their familiarity with the ways in which the magical winds blow. However, no Wizard can unerringly anticipate every pattern within the Winds of Magic, leading the plans of many to unravel in the cruel hands of fate.

Arcane Magic Ploys

The various ploys available to a Wizard who thinks themselves sufficiently puissant to predict the flow of the Winds of Magic are represented in two ways:

Arcane Magic Cards: This is a deck of 56 cards from which players can draw during the course of a game.

Arcane Magic Table: This is a 2D6 table listing the same ploys that can be found in the Arcane Magic deck of cards.

Generating Ploys

Arcane Magic ploys are generated at the start of the game, after the players have generated spells for their Wizards. Each player generates six ploys either by shuffling a deck of Arcane Magic cards and drawing six cards from the top, or by rolling six times on the table opposite. If each player has a deck of Arcane Magic cards, each should draw from their own. If only one has a deck, both players may draw from it, taking turns to draw a single card. However, should either player draw more of one card than is allowed on the table opposite, they must replace it, re-shuffle the deck, and draw another.

If neither player has a deck of Arcane Magic cards, both should roll on the table instead. Whichever method is used, both players must use the same, and ploys must be generated in clear view of your opponent.

Arcane Magic Ploys Table

If you do not have a deck of Arcane Magic cards, roll 2D6 on the table below to generate Arcane Magic ploys. When using this table to generate ploys, some results are limited. Should you roll more than the number indicated, simply re-roll the dice. Each result is described in full on the pages that follow:

Using Ploys

A ploy can be used by any model able to use it (i.e., a Wizard, a Dwarf Runesmith, or a model with a Bound spell), and some ploys associated with dispelling can be used when attempting a Fated dispel, as detailed in their descriptions. However, each player can only use one ploy per phase. Once a ploy has been used, it is discarded and cannot be used again for the remainder of the game.
