Assault on Leonen
URL Copied!

Weeks of small, yet bloody, skirmishes followed the first meeting between the armies from Grand Cathay and the Chainmaker. Though the devotees of the Ruinous Powers had been foiled on the outskirts of Oostwold, they in turn had blunted the advance of the Cathayan and Empire forces, making them pay in blood for each mile. These small-scale battles continued for many weeks, until the combined forces of Miao Ying and Empress Magritta reached the fortified town of Leonen. Though the preliminary bombardment from the Cathayan artillery shattered the town's defences, the Chainmaker's forces quickly rallied to face the new threat. Victory for Miao Ying would mark the turning point in driving back the Chainmaker's invasion, but defeat would herald the beginning of the end for the people of Westerland.

Second Battle

Whilst this scenario is the second of three linked battles, it can be played as a standalone scenario.

Boons of Victory

If playing this game as the second of three linked battles, the winner of the previous battle will receive a boon:

  • If the attacker won the previous battle, once per game, each character in the defender's army may re-roll the D6 when rolling on the Gaze of the Gods table.

  • If the defender won the previous battle, once per game, each unit in the attacker's army whose troop type is war machine may re-roll an Artillery dice.

The Attacker

The attacker should write a single 3,000 points muster list using the Jade Fleet Army of Infamy composition list. The General of this army must be Miao Ying, the Storm Dragon.

The Defender

The defender should write a single 3,000 points muster list using either the Warriors of Chaos Grand Army composition list or the Wolves of the Sea Army of Infamy Composition List. The General of this army must be Frydaal the Chainmaker.

Alternatively, this scenario may be played with any two armies of the players' choosing.

Set-up

This battle takes place in the ruined remains of the town of Leonen. The battlefield can be set up as shown below, or by using the Wasteland terrain generator. The defender's deployment zone should also contain a number of ruined houses to represent what little remained standing following the preliminary bombardment from the Cathayan artillery.

Deployment

The defender deploys their army anywhere in the defender's deployment zone, as shown on the map opposite. Once complete, the attacker deploys their entire army within the attacker's deployment zone, as shown on the map below.

First Turn

In this scenario, the attacker will automatically take the first turn.

Game Length

Before the game begins, players can choose to play a 'fixed' length game or a 'random' length game:

Fixed Game Length: The battle will last for six rounds, until one side concedes, or until the time limit agreed by the players is reached.

Random Game Length: The battle will last a random number of rounds or until one side concedes. Starting at the end of the fifth round, roll a D6 at the end of each round. Add the round number to the dice roll. If the total is 10 or more, the battle ends immediately. If the total is less than 10 then the battle continues for at least one more round.

Scenario Special Rules

"The Gods Watch On!": A Character or Unit Champion in the defender's force who slays an opponent in a challenge must immediately roll on the Gaze of the Gods table.

The Might of Grand Cathay: Before the game begins, each unit with the War Machine Unit type in the attacker's force may shoot as if it were the Shooting phase of their turn.

Victory!

Once the battle has ended, use Victory Points to determine which player is the winner. In addition, at the end of the game:

  • The attacking player wins a bonus 50 Victory Points for each of their units wholly within the defending player's deployment zone with a unit strength of 10 or more.

  • The defending player wins a bonus 50 Victory Points for each unit with the War Machine Unit Type that has been slain.
